In this blog I will be going through some of my experiences with helping people who have wanted to stop smoking, smoking cessation, using hypnotherapy!
Losing count of the number of smokers I have seen in the past! one thing is apparent with most smokers! and that is they have peak moments of motivation when wanting to stop.! I ask all my clients, "on a scale of 1-10, 10 being highly motivated 1 being very low motivation, how motivated are you?" Ideally, the client needs to be 7 upwards, this should be a sign that they consciously really wish to stop smoking! Unfortunately, hypnosis is not a magic wand! Rather a solution-focused intervention.
One of the main issues with trying to stop a habit is the conscious mind wants to stop but the subconscious habits are embedded and that's the tricky part!! The great thing about hypnosis and it's many reasons for why it works so well, it deals with the subconscious part of the mind! the tricky part :-)
Once I've gauged motivational levels from the client and they are at a good range of motivation! We then discuss reasons why the individual smokes, emotional, habitual or boredom sometimes anxiety can be the reason! Once we've evaluated the clients smoking pattern and reasons for this, we will then look into what strategies are best suited for that client.
Clients who smoke out of habit or boredom tend to be the easier clients to help! If however, the client smokes because of an anxiety issue, then more therapy would be used to address the anxiety issues first, then we would deal with the smoking habit. Most clients would take one session if the reason for smoking is Anxiety or emotional then sometimes 2-3 sessions would be more sufficient.
Empowering the client to feel able to proceed with their new change is a important part, then moving on with suggestions of becoming a non-smoker and then allowing the client to imagine themselves in the future as a non-smoker, getting them to imagine scenario's situations where they would before smoked but now a new feeling of strength ability to cope and proceed as a happy healthy non-smoker.
This with many other techniques which help the client to rid themselves of the habit should maintain a client's desires for change, and with very positive success rates, it's no wonder hypnotherapy is becoming more popular for people wishing to quit!
